K-State String Fling 50 years and beyond!

The first String Fling at Kansas State University took place in 1973. Each year hundreds of students in grades 5-9 converge on campus for a weekend of fun orchestra rehearsals and performance, with five orchestras led by experienced and engaging school orchestra directors.

Students who participate in their school orchestras as well as those who study privately are all welcome to attend String Fling.

String Fling offers an exciting opportunity for young students to play in large orchestras and perform at Kansas State University. Proceeds from the registration fees help fund scholarships for K-State orchestra students. Attendance at String Fling provides a wonderful musical experience for younger students, and supports university students pursuing music degrees and/or the life-long avocation of string playing!

Warren Walker, K-State Professor of Cello, directed String Fling from 1976-1987, Dr. David Littrell directed from 1988-2018, and Dr. Cora Cooper, Professor Emeritus, from 2018-2022. Dr. Rachel Dirks, Director of Orchestral Studies, now serves as the director of String Fling ‘24.
